Der Löwe ist los! Heerstraße Nord, 2025

Documentation of the project at Magistratsweg 10, Berlin Spandau

A new, vibrant art project has been created on Heerstraße Nord. On May 12 and 13, third-graders from Christian Morgenstern Elementary School worked with the internationally renowned artist Jumu Monster to paint a colorful mural. The mural features Tetra Paks, flowers, and imaginary creatures invented by the children. Jumu Monster provided some ideas, and the children sketched others before transferring them to the building's wall in large, colorful shapes with spray cans and brushes. A section painted with blackboard paint invites spontaneous chalk drawings, transforming the location into an open space for experimentation for people of all ages.

The young participants report with shining eyes how proud they are. Nine-year-old Mariam is looking forward to showing her family the picture. This energy and creativity will flow into the next major project: a monumental 50-meter-high mural to be created on the Magistratsweg 10 façade this summer. The children have already toured the site to get an idea of the space where Jumu Monster will create the artwork. An accompanying survey allows all residents to contribute their perceptions and stories, which will be incorporated into the planning process as artistic inspiration.

Working together on the community wall and preparing the façade image are more than just design steps; they are an expression of active participation that fosters community and reimagines the neighborhood's social space. The Berliner Leben Foundation and Gewobag invite all Spandau residents to participate and set an example of togetherness and creativity that will last.
