Local Legends: Spandau, 2024

Documentation of the project at Blasewitzer Ring 12, Berlin-Spandau

Lukas Zeilinger’s ONE WALL, Local Legends: Spandau – A Painting Dhaka Project, is situated at Blasewitzer Ring 12 in Berlin-Spandau. In the chapter LOVE LETTERS IN THE CITY, the exhibition leaves the museum space and expands with this project into the city of Berlin.

On August 10, 2024, we unveiled our latest mural, the ONE WALL Local Legends: Spandau – A Painting Dhaka Project by Lukas Zeilinger. As part of the Painting Dhaka series, artist Lukas Zeilinger not only designed a new ONE WALL on two sides of the parking lot but also collaborated with local young people in a summer camp through our Stadtraum!Plus program of the foundation Berliner Leben in early July 2024.

Graffiti, often misunderstood as mere vandalism, is in fact a vital subculture that offers a retreat for those in social hotspots. It provides a safe space, a parallel society where individuals can build self-confidence, find a sense of belonging, and form connections – often in challenging family or social situations. The workshop’s goal was to leave a positive impact on the young participants, both in their minds and on the wall. One result of the workshop was the Community Wall next to the youthclub.

Staaken, a self-contained community within Berlin with limited connectivity to the rest of the city, served as the backdrop for this project. Instead of imposing an unrelated mural, Lukas Zeilinger engaged with local young people from Outreach B18 to reflect their stories and daily lives through colorful images. The result is a bustling visual narrative – a collage that invites awe, contemplation, laughter, and recognition.

Commissioned work.
