Shepard Fairey is a world-renowned American muralist, graphic artist, and social activist. One of his best-known projects is the HOPE poster which supported Barack Obama's presidential election campaign in 2008. In his prints, murals, stickers, and posters in public spaces, Fairey combines typography and imagery to convey his distinctive brand of social critique. For him, art also means initiating uncomfortable discussions and stirring unsettling feelings.

Fairey first gained attention in 1989 with his iconic motif André The Giant. Soon after, he began his ongoing OBEY Giant project as an anonymous sticker campaign: a campaign that has no obvious meaning or commercial objective. Fairey states that his main goal is “… to reawaken a sense of wonder about one’s environment. The OBEY sticker attempts to stimulate curiosity and bring people to question both the sticker and their relationship with their surroundings.”
