Ghost Paintings
OXFrench artist OX has been working in public spaces for almost forty years. He uses commercial billboards, which he transforms in discerning and humorous ways into something new and dynamic. OX works with optical illusion and patterns, creating a playful and thoughtful extension of billboards beyond the frame as he responds to forms, colors and the shadows surrounding them.
“I am interested in the landscape, architecture, signage, street furniture, advertising or even shadows.”
The new interventions in Berlin’s urban space were prepared in the artist’s studio on plastic underlay. The artworks were installed on the street and only paint outlines remained on the plastic sheets. Unlike the ephemeral street works, the Ghost Paintings presented here are permanent in nature. These site-specific new works can be seen in the museum on a screen, along with a video showing the actions that produced the artworks.
