Dequindre Cut
Stephanie BuerStephanie Buer, born in 1982, is an American artist who studied in Detroit and Vancouver, focusing on r ealist oil p aintings and char coal drawings. Her detailed works attest to a deep fascination for abandoned landscapes – for architectural decay in bleak urban and industrial environments. Buer’s atmospheric work seeks beauty and contemplation in silent processes of change, including change brought about by vandalism, by works of art, and by resilient nature.
“It [the Dequindre Cut in East Detroit] was beautifully overgrown and a favorite spot to wander while I lived there.”
The painting Dequindre Cut (2014) depicts a section of an abandoned railroad line in East Detroit, which inspired the artist to create a series of works. During the ten years that Buer lived in Detroit, this rail line was one of her favorite places for strolling and taking photographs – the basis for her paintings and charcoal drawings. A lot of graffiti could be found along the tracks, and it was preserved when the Dequindre Cut was turned into an urban recreational path.
