Kottbusser Tor, 2017

Acrylic on canvas, 140 cm x 180 cm

2501, born in 1981, is an Italian artist whose multidisciplinary approach ranges from painting, installations, and sculpture to photography and film. He is intrigued by maps, city architecture, and the relations between cyclical patterns and urban topography, all of which is reflected in his complex works. Using dynamic line structures, he creates the impression of a lively, three-dimensional geometry that unfolds from different perspectives. The inspiration from the city and its cartography is impressively transferred to façades. The dominant colors in this interplay of painting and architecture are black and white.

“The idea for this specific piece is to represent geographical areas as if the point of view were aerial and zenithal.”

Kottbusser Tor is a study painting for the long-term project Animated Landscape. In this project, 2501 transfers the act of painting in public space to the medium of video, capturing the process and its gestures and establishing new “atmospheric” relationships with the places involved.
