Banksy
Biography
Banksy is without a doubt one of the most prolific and renown street artists of our time. Inspired by other greats of urban art like French pochoir artist Blek Le Rat and Bristol native and Massive Attack-member Robert Del Naja, Banksy became the poster child for street, more specifically, stencil art. His work was featured as part of the opening of the URBAN NATION MUSEUM in 2017.
For decades now, Banksy has been known for his stencils, which often are a satirical and subversive commentary on social and political issues. Grown from the Bristol underground scene around the 1990s the British artist, whose real identity remains a mystery to this day, started off as a freehand graffiti artist. A few years later his style of art, which has always carried messages of anti-war, anti-capitalist as well as anti-establishment, changed from graffiti to stencil works. Despite or even because of his stance against art as a commercial commodity and due to stunts like one of his works being shredded when being auctioned off at Sotheby’s, his pieces have are considered extremely valuable by collectors.
